Our clients include local, national and international organizations.

Grant Barkman isn’t your typical management consultant and he likes it that way.

The President and Founder of DecisionWorks Consulting Inc. believes their visual-based approach to solving business challenges differentiates the Winnipeg-based firm from traditional competitors because the tools his team provides help clients picture a strategy and plot a course to get where they want to go. In Barkman’s mind, a graphic is worth much more than words and is easier to absorb and retain than words alone.

A first step for a typical management consultant is to do a SWOT analysis, which is identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the situation, but Barkman says that often forces clients into unnatural ways of structuring their thoughts. He doesn’t want to use textbook solutions to real-world challenges.

“Through our graphic facilitation, we can facilitate the thought processes of our clients to develop in much more natural ways. We talk about what outcomes they want to achieve and help them identify the key decisions they need to make while capturing the journey graphically — turning vision into action,” he says. “We believe the common language that transcends written language, technical jargon and traditional methods of identifying business outcomes is visual.”

Barkman has been an advocate of visualization since the 1980s and he honed his craft for more than five years in Europe and Asia/Pacific before applying it in North America over the past 18 years.

DecisionWorks operates in both the public and private sectors across industries such as finance, health care, supply chain, manufacturing and retail. Clients include the City of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, NorthWest Company, CP Rail, Interpipeline, Westoba Credit Union, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to name a few. Barkman is looking to do more work in new technology and business innovation.

He believes DecisionWorks offers amazing value in their particular niche to local, national and international clients alike, and he backs up his talk by rolling up his sleeves. As the company’s lead facilitator, he’s out meeting with clients on a regular basis and usually has between 10 to 12 files on the go at any given time.
